The MRB and Nonconformance Kit HandbookChapter 7 of 26

Containment

Containment protects the customer while the cause is being found. It does not wait for the cause, and it is not finished when the shop floor is sorted. Use B11 checklist 1, and answer every location:

  • Work in process at every operation, including rework and the inspection queue.
  • Finished goods, stock, kits and anything staged for shipment.
  • Receiving, the hold area, and product at outside processors and suppliers.
  • Product in transit and product already delivered, with lots and quantities.
  • Other part numbers that share the machine, program, material lot or supplier.

Start the suspect window at the last time the characteristic was shown good by a record, not a date somebody remembers, and end it at the point where a check or a fix now stops further suspect output. Make sure the sort can actually find the defect: the right gauge, calibrated, with written accept criteria.

If suspect product may already have been delivered, the customer must hear from you, and quickly. AS9100D 8.7.1 expects you to notify the customer, and any affected supplier, when nonconforming product has been delivered; the contract usually sets how fast and in what form. The escalation matrix (D15) sets the times inside your plant so the customer clock is not lost before it starts.

A management aid, not certification or a registrar audit. Using it does not by itself show conformity to AS9100D or any other standard, and your customers' requirements may add to it.

Clause numbers refer to AS9100D (SAE AS9100 Rev D) unless another document is named. The standards' text is not reproduced here: use your own licensed copy.
