The MRB and Nonconformance Kit HandbookChapter 11 of 26

Scrap, returns and customer property

Scrap

Scrapped product is marked conspicuously and permanently, or kept under positive control, until it is physically made unusable: cut, crushed or drilled through a functional feature. Do it as soon as the disposition is signed, photograph it for anything high-value or safety-relevant, and close the NCR only after it is done. Whole parts never leave the plant in the scrap bin.

Return to supplier

Tag the product with the return reference and keep it in the cage until it ships. Record the shipment and the supplier's acknowledgment, and raise a corrective action request (B01) when the supplier is the source and the defect matters or repeats. Tell your customer if the shortage will affect their delivery. Never return a suspect counterfeit part: chapter 12.

Customer property

Material, tooling and parts the customer owns are their property even when they are nonconforming. Tell the customer before scrapping or returning them, record their answer, and keep their property identified as theirs in the cage.
