The Workforce Competence Kit HandbookChapter 8 of 26

Coverage and shifts

The Coverage tab counts, for each skill, how many people are qualified overall and on each shift, against the minimum. Read it in this order: skills nobody can do alone; skills one person holds; skills below the minimum; then the shift columns for every skill, because a skill covered on first shift and empty on second is covered eight hours a day.

What coverage showsWhat we do
No one qualifiedStop assigning the task to anyone below level 3 without supervision; train or bring in cover now; tell the general manager.
One person onlyA second person on the training plan this month; a plan for that person's absence; tell the general manager.
Below minimumTraining plan lines with dates; review at the monthly meeting.
Zero on a shift that does the workHold the work for a qualified person, move a qualified person, or train on that shift; never 'do your best'.
A key person leaving or retiringTreat it as a coverage gap from the day you know; overlap the successor's training with them.
