The IA9100 Transition Package GuideChapter 2 of 18

What the IAQG has published, and what it has not

IA9100 draft: based on the IAQG's published changes. IA9100 is not yet final, and the final text may change these topics and clause numbers.

The IAQG has announced that the next revision of AS9100 will be published as IA9100. In November 2023 it published key-change summaries of the draft, one organized by clause and one by system. Those summaries are the only basis anyone has for planning today. IA9100 is not yet final. There is no final text, and no transition timetable this guide could honestly quote. The final text may add, reword, move or remove items, and its clause numbers may differ from the draft's.

This package therefore does three things deliberately. It paraphrases the summaries and never reproduces standards text. It refers to the change themes and to the AS9100D clauses where each subject sits today, not to draft clause numbers that may move. And it plans in windows counted from the month the final text is published, never in calendar dates.

Four kinds of change

The summaries describe each change in one of four ways, and the kind tells you where the effort will be:

  • Was guidance; now a requirement. Product safety and counterfeit parts prevention. Most shops already do some of this; the work is getting 'some' onto a record that covers all of it.
  • New in IA9100. Information security, the culture and ethics leadership items, deciding and telling the level of control for suppliers, and the measurement systems analysis note. These are where real gaps usually are.
  • Strengthened. Foreign object prevention as a planned control, phased planning, statistical techniques, design activities, protection of electronic records, and process verification beyond the first article.
  • Unchanged text, now part of a wider requirement. Suppliers controlling their own suppliers, and ethics awareness for your people and your suppliers. Usually in place; check it is on the record.

The thirty change items behind the themes are listed, each with its AS9100D clause today, on the planning matrix (AQL-H02) and in chapter 7. The culture and ethics wording in particular may still change in the final text.

Clause numbers refer to AS9100D (SAE AS9100 Rev D) unless another document is named. The standards' text is not reproduced here: use your own licensed copy.
