The IA9100 Transition Package Guide

A practical way to move an aerospace supplier from AS9100D to IA9100: find where you stand from your own records, plan the work against the month the final text is published, do the cheap, useful things now, and keep management deciding, with fourteen tools and one worked example.

IA9100 draft: based on the IAQG's published changes. IA9100 is not yet final, and the final text may change these topics and clause numbers.

The problem it solves

IA9100 reaches most small aerospace suppliers as a line in a customer bulletin and a question from the general manager: are we ready? There is no final text to buy, the quality team is one to three people, and the next AS9100D audit still has to be passed. Shops react in one of two ways: they wait until the final text is published and the registrar wants a date, then try to change everything in a quarter; or they rewrite the quality system to a draft that may change, and then rewrite it again. This guide is the operating manual for the IA9100 Transition Package. It sets out what the IAQG has published and what it has not, one workflow from the first self-check to the transition audit, who does what, the theme-by-theme work, the monthly rhythm, a thirty-day setup, the first sixty days after the final text, and one plant's transition through every tool.

Who it is for

Quality directors and quality managers who will lead the transition, and the plant or general manager who sponsors it.

When to use it

Now, before the final text: to find where you stand and start the work worth doing today. Again the week the final IA9100 text is published (chapter 13).

How to use this handbook

  1. Read chapters 1 to 3: what the package is, what is published and what is not, and how we approach a transition.
  2. Agree the roles in chapter 5 with your plant manager.
  3. Follow the thirty-day setup in chapter 12, starting with the self-check (chapter 6).
  4. Use chapter 7 for each theme as you work it, and chapter 8 for the planning tools.
  5. Take the transition to management review with chapter 9, and keep the rhythm in chapter 11.
  6. Read the worked example (chapter 14) to see one transition through every tool; keep the quick reference (chapter 15) at hand. Chapters 17 and 18 cover the mistakes we see and the questions we are asked.
  7. When the final text is published, work chapter 13.

The package follows the IAQG's published key-change summaries of the IA9100 draft. It is not the standard and not the final text, which may add, change, renumber or remove items; re-read every tool against the final text when it is published. The windows, thresholds and starter lists are starting points; your registrar's transition arrangements and your customers' requirements come first.

A management aid, not certification or a registrar audit. Using it does not by itself show conformity to AS9100D or any other standard, and your customers' requirements may add to it.

Clause numbers refer to AS9100D (SAE AS9100 Rev D) unless another document is named. The standards' text is not reproduced here: use your own licensed copy.
