The Customer Complaint Response Kit HandbookChapter 11 of 21

Escapes and the customer's scorecard

The customer keeps score whether or not you do. The scorecard and escape tracker (AQL-B16) puts the customer's view next to yours: their rating and status as they publish it, and your own PPM, on-time delivery and complaints for that customer, month by month. Its escape register records every escape with the detection point that missed it and the escape cause, so the pattern across escapes is visible.

  • Copy the customer's rating exactly, even when you disagree with it. Challenge it with the customer, with your records, not in your spreadsheet.
  • Write down what each status means to that customer: plans, reports, visits, consequences. A status change should start a plan, not a search for the requirements.
  • Count escapes per customer. A PPM figure can look healthy while a customer is losing patience; customers remember events.
  • Read the escape register down the columns. When the same detection point or escape cause appears twice, it is a system problem that deserves its own corrective action.
  • Report the escapes you find yourself. Product you find nonconforming after shipment goes to the customer at once and onto the register.

A management aid, not certification or a registrar audit. Using it does not by itself show conformity to AS9100D or any other standard, and your customers' requirements may add to it.

Clause numbers refer to AS9100D (SAE AS9100 Rev D) unless another document is named. The standards' text is not reproduced here: use your own licensed copy.

Aegis Insights are our own guidance, labeled wherever they appear: how we approach this work, not a requirement of any standard or customer.
