The Calibration Control Kit HandbookChapter 20 of 22

Situations we meet often

SituationHow we handle it
The lab adjusted the instrument and reported only as-left data.Ask the lab for the as-found data. If it cannot be had, treat the as-found result as unknown and assess the window as if it failed. Fix the purchase order wording.
An employee's own micrometer was used on product and is not on the register.Quarantine and calibrate it. If it fails, assess the product it measured. Then either register it or keep personal tools off product.
The gauge is overdue but reads fine on a block. It is still overdue: take it out of use, calibrate it, and if the as-found result is within limits, record that no assessment is needed.
A certificate is in tolerance, but drifting toward a limit.Shorten the interval now and add an interim check. Record the reason on the register.
The customer supplied the gauge.Register it with the customer's interval and rules; tell the customer at once if it fails or is damaged.
No inspection record names the instrument.Count every instrument that could have been used as the one in question. Then add the instrument ID field to the record.
A study fails on a gauge already accepting parts.Decide whether past acceptance is in question (as for an out-of-tolerance result), contain, and improve the method or the gauge before re-running.
The CMM crashed.Requalify the probe and measure the artifact before use; treat any failure as out of tolerance from the last good artifact check.
