The problem it solves
New suppliers are often approved on a certificate and a quote: the buyer needs a source, the certificate is in the file, and the supplier goes on the list as 'Approved' with no scope. The questions that matter go unasked: does their accreditation cover the exact process on our PO, is our customer's approval needed, can they hold our tolerance on our volume, who does their special processes, will they accept our quality clauses. This assessment walks through those questions, marks the ones that must be met before production, counts the result, and records a decision with a scope and conditions that go straight onto the approved supplier list.
Who uses it
Supplier quality engineers, who assess; quality managers, who decide; buyers and engineers, who request a new source.
When
Before the first production order with a new supplier, a new site of an existing supplier, or new kind of work from an existing one; when a customer directs you to a source; and when a supplier comes off the list and asks to return.
