The Internal Audit Execution Kit HandbookChapter 6 of 19

Planning an audit

Two weeks before the audit, the lead auditor fills in the plan (A06 Audit plan tab) with the process owner. The plan's most useful section is 'What we already know': the process measures, the changes since the last audit and the findings to follow up. They tell you where to sample.

WhenWhoWhat
2 weeks beforeLead auditor and process ownerAgree objective, scope and dates; ask for the process measures and records needed in advance
10 days beforeLead auditorRead the measures, NCRs, complaints, changes and earlier findings; choose the job to follow and the samples
1 week beforeLead auditorSend the plan; process owner agrees it; program owner approves
1 week beforeProcess ownerArea walk and practice session with each crew (A09); check the evidence map lines for the process (A04)
Day beforeAudit team30-minute team meeting: who covers what, the trails to follow, the checklist lines in scope

Choose the checklist for the audit. For a process audit, use the Process Audit Checklist (A07) and add questions for the process's own risks. For the yearly system audit, use the Clause-by-Clause Internal Audit Checklist (A05) and strike the lines outside scope. For a special process or supplier audit, start from A07 and add the process specification's requirements and the customer's checklist where there is one.
