A program is only as good as the people doing the audits. Build a pool large enough that no auditor does more than one audit a month, from more than one department.
| Step | What it takes | Evidence on file |
|---|---|---|
| Selected | Curious, respected on the floor, comfortable asking questions; from purchasing, engineering, inspection, planning | Nomination by the program owner |
| Trained | An internal auditor course covering AS9100D, the process approach and audit technique | Course certificate |
| Observed | Two audits as a team member under a lead auditor, with feedback on each | Two audit reports naming them; the lead auditor's feedback |
| Qualified | The program owner signs them off as an internal auditor | Date on the A06 Auditors tab |
| Kept current | At least two audits a year; watched by a lead auditor every two years | Audits led; date of the last observed audit |
| Lead auditor | A lead auditor course and several audits led well | Course certificate; reports |
Independence is about the work, not the job title. An auditor must not audit their own work or their own area. Record on the Auditors tab, for each person, the areas they must not audit, and check the Independent column on every line of the schedule.

A management aid, not certification or a registrar audit. Using it does not by itself show conformity to AS9100D or any other standard, and your customers' requirements may add to it.
Clause numbers refer to AS9100D (SAE AS9100 Rev D) unless another document is named. The standards' text is not reproduced here: use your own licensed copy.
