Production Traveler Review Checklist

Two reviews of the document that carries a job through the shop: one before the traveler is released to the floor, so it says what the drawing and the order require, and one when the job is complete, so the record shows every operation done, every part accounted for and every exception authorized.

The problem it solves

The traveler (also called the router or the job card) is the one record that follows the part from the saw to the shipping dock, and it is where small gaps become escapes: an operation missing from the sequence, an inspection point that never made it from the inspection plan, a drawing revision that does not match the order, a quantity that drops from 60 to 58 with no NCR, a stamp in the wrong box, an operation done out of sequence with nobody's authorization. Auditors and customers read travelers closely because they show whether the process ran as planned. These two checklists catch the gaps twice: when the traveler is written and released, and when the job closes before the certificate of conformance is signed.

Who uses it

Planners and manufacturing engineers who write travelers; supervisors and quality engineers who release them; final inspectors and quality staff who close them before shipment.

When

Checklist 1 for every new or revised traveler before its first release to the floor, and for a sample of routine releases each month. Checklist 2 at the close of every job before the certificate of conformance is signed, or on a sample when your final inspection already closes each traveler.
