The problem it solves
Document control findings are the most common findings in aerospace audits, and they are rarely about the quality manual. They are a superseded work instruction in a cell binder, a CNC program still in a machine's memory after the change, a customer specification held at last year's revision, a record nobody can find. A document list on its own does not catch any of these. This register follows each document through its life: approval, every place it is used, every revision issued and the old copies withdrawn, external documents checked against their source, spot checks at the point of use, and how long each kind of record is kept.
Who uses it
Document control, quality managers and engineers, and anyone who owns a procedure, instruction, program or inspection plan.
When
Set it up once with every controlled document. Update it whenever a revision is approved, check external documents on their interval, make two or three point-of-use checks a week, and review the Summary monthly and before every audit.
