The problem it solves

Plenty of shops chart a key characteristic because a customer asked for it, and few use the chart to run the process. Limits get drawn from the drawing tolerance, signals go unnoticed or unanswered, and the chart is filled in at the end of the shift. This worksheet calculates proper control limits from the process's own data, checks every subgroup against four signal rules as it is entered, and keeps the reaction on the same row as the signal, so the chart is a record of control, not just of measurement.

Who uses it

Manufacturing and quality engineers who set up charts; machinists and inspectors who keep them.

When

On key characteristics and on any feature where the control plan calls for SPC; after a corrective action on a process; and when you want warning of a drift before parts go out of tolerance.
