The problem it solves

Auditors test traceability with a walk: they pick a finished part and ask you to take it back to the work order, the inspection, the special process certificates, the receiving record, the material certificate and the mill heat. Most shops have every record. Fewer have checked that the numbers on them agree, and the walk fails on a heat number that does not match or a certificate quantity one short. This exercise gives your team twelve realistic records for one fitting with deliberate gaps, a self-checking trace sheet, an answer key that explains how an auditor reads each link, and a sheet to run the same walk on your own parts.

Who uses it, and when

Quality teams, receiving and final inspectors, internal auditors, and anyone who trains them. Before an audit, as a training exercise for new inspectors and auditors, and whenever you change how receiving or outside processing is checked. Allow about 30 minutes for the exercise.
